Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

AVID is a program that will be incorporated within the classroom to help students with success in high school and beyond. Students will be responsible for keeping a well-organized binder, will learn Cornell note taking strategies, time management skills, and goal setting. This program has been implemented within the junior high and middle schools throughout the district.  This program will help encourage success for students.

 6th Grade Grading and Homework

Grading Policy and Evaluation of Student Work

 Papers are corrected on a daily basis, and we make every effort to return work in a timely manner. It is most beneficial if students can see their performance (especially with tests) and be able to reflect on that performance ASAP. Tests are returned within one week.  Assignments are checked off for completion.  Some assignments are formative, meaning that instruction of the subject matter is still taking place.  These assignments are used as a guide for our instruction and are often not “scored”.  Summative assessments (such as the end of unit test) are utilized for determining trimester grades and are scored based on district criteria:

                                          3= Meeting Standard (mastery)

                                          2= Progressing Toward Standard

                                          1= Not Progressing/Unsatisfactory Progress Toward Standard

Homework

Your child can expect homework nightly. Students may have homework in any subject area.  Please be sure to check your child’s binder nightly and initial his or her planner that homework has been completed. Planners are expected to be initialed each night as part of your child’s homework.  If you have any questions regarding homework, please check the 6th grade web site.  If a student is absent, he or she is responsible for all missed work.

6th Grade Classroom Management Plan

Discipline Policy

Level 1 – Verbal Warning

Level 2 – “Sign-In” – The student will sign into the behavior log and will indicate the reason for signing in.  This will also result in the loss of their next recess in which the student will make a phone call home, as well as complete a reflection notice.  The reflection notice will be sent home for a parent signature and is expected to be returned the following day.

Level 3 – Student will be sent to another class or to the office.  If a serious issue takes place (i.e. fighting or harassment), it will result in an immediate referral to an administrator, even for a first time offense.

Positive Reinforcements/Consequences

Students are recognized for their effort in many ways throughout the school day. Individual, Small Group, and Whole Class recognition is given.

Communication

 Ways to Reach us

                                                         Phone                                   Email

Miss Bane                              771-1830 ext. 128                   wbane@rcsdk8.org

Mrs. Wright                           771-1830 ext. 127                   dwright@rcsdk8.org

When requesting us to call/email you back regarding an issue, it helps if you can give some background so that we can have the information needed when we get in touch with you. We will make every effort to get back to you by the end of the school day when you leave a message.  As this is not always possible, we appreciate your patience. If you would like to meet in person, it helps to schedules an appointment ahead of time.  We will work to meet with you within a 24-hour period, but we may have prior commitments we will need to work around.  We value your time and want to avoid needing to cut our time short if we have other afternoon obligations.  Setting up an appointment allows us to set aside time to devote our full attention to you.

How to Stay Connected

We are very excited this year to have a 6th grade website.  It is still in the construction phase, so please be patient with us!  On this site you will be able to find daily homework updates, announcements, links useful sites and other important information.

Student Presence at Meetings/Conferences

In 6th grade, we feel that it is important to include your child in any meeting regarding them, whether the issue is academic or behavior related; this includes the November conferences.  This way we are all on the same page and nothing is lost in translation.  If you have a need for a meeting without your child being present, please let us know.

  Parent Involvement in 6th Grade

Dear 6th Grade Families,

If you would like to volunteer to help in the classroom PLEASE let us know.  Volunteering can take on many forms both in and out of the classroom and during or after school hours.

                    Some opportunities are:

                    Art Docent

                    Room Parent

                    Science Camp Fundraising (*including Skate Night Helpers)

                    End of Year Picnic

If any of the items above interest you, or you have another suggestion of something you would like to help out with, please let us know!  If you decide to be a volunteer, please let us know the times/days that you are available.  We especially need Skate Night helpers.  Skate Nights are a 6th Grade fundraiser, with 100% of the profits going towards the overall cost of Science Camp, so it is important for 6th grade families to be involved!   We will contact volunteers within a couple of weeks to determine a schedule that best fits into the classroom and the volunteer’s schedule.

Thank you!

Miss Bane and Mrs. Wright
